What’s in my wedding photography camera bag?

Wedding Photography Camera Kit

I regularly get asked by clients and photographers what camera equipment I use for shooting wedding photography and why.

Well the answer to the question is that I carry a range of cameras and lenses to suit the different situations I face.  This usually depends on the quality of light, the location and the subject framing I want to achieve.

The most important thing to note is that the photographer takes the pictures and not the camera. Most professional photographers have at some point come across someone who says “Wow – that’s a nice camera!”. These people can mistakenly make the assumption that a nice camera equals professional quality photographs. Expensive camera equipment certainly has it’s advantages but it is the artistic knowledge and creativity of the person using it that turns a snap shot into an epic masterpiece.

The camera is simply just a tool. Great photographs come from great photographers!

In my bag I will always carry the following equipment:

Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-DSLR-Camera-Angle

2 X Canon 5D Mark III cameras

This camera is highly regarded as the world’s best camera for wedding photography. Full-frame 22 MP DSLR with incredible lowlight performance and image quality. The large sensor allows for shallow depth of field for blurring the background/foreground. A 2nd camera body means I don’t miss the action due to lens changes.

My back-up camera is a 20 MP Full-frame which again works incredibly well in low light and offers exceptional image quality. Having a back-up is absolutely necessary should something happen with my main cameras.

Canon 35mm f1.4 LCanon EF 35mm f 1.4 L USM-Lens

My most recent investment this is a wider prime lens with a fixed focal length. It is unbeatable in low light and the very shallow depth of field creates images that are just magical.

Canon-EF-85mm-f-1.2-L-II-USM-Lens

Canon 85mm f1.2 Mark II L

An incredible low light portrait prime lens that offers the ultimate in shallow depth of field for unsurpassed subject isolation. Very heavy but simply awesome. Canon’s fastest lens available.

Canon EF 135mm f2.0 L USM LensCanon 135mm f2

My most recent investment along with the 35mm. This fixed focal length telephoto lens is amazing in low light and Canon’s sharpest lens available. The buttery smooth out of focus backgrounds obtainable with lens make this lens my favourite ceremony lens, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful lenses that Canon produces.

Canon-EF-24-70mm-f-2.8-L-II-USM-Lens

Canon 24-70mm f2.8 Mark II L

The new and updated version is regarded by many as the best zoom lens ever made. It is sharper than many primes offering the highest quality available in this zoom range.

canon-ef-70-200mm-f-4-0-l-usm-lensCanon 70-200mm f4 IS L

A very sharp telephoto lens that is reasonably light and portable for it’s size. Very useful for shooting from far distances. This lens allows me to be ‘out of the way’ to get the shot I need. It also offers great perspective compression for flattering portraits and a great backup for ceremonies.

Canon-EF-100mm-f-2.8-USM-Macro-LensCanon 100mm f2.8 Macro

A superb macro lens for shots of the rings and any other very small detail that I want to capture.

Canon 17-40mm f4 L

An exceptional extreme wide-angle lens for capturing shots of the venue, interiors and quirky dance floor shots. This lens allows me to get all the action happening in a single shot.
