Information about the venue
You could certainly be forgiven for thinking that Clissold House is located in a peaceful little village nestled in the English countryside. In fact, this delightful wedding venue can be found in North London — in Stoke Newington to be precise. Set amidst fifty-four acres of magnificent public parkland, this impressive, beautifully restored, Grade II listed mansion, with its distinctive Doric columned porch, was originally built as part of a private estate at the end of the 18th. Century. In 2007, Clissold House was granted a substantial amount of money from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Between 2010 and 2012 an estimated £8.9 million was spent tastefully and sympathetically upgrading the property and the surrounding parkland.
The short stretch of water in front of the mansion was once part of the New River, an artificial river which ran for twenty miles bringing fresh drinking water to the capital. The two ponds in the park are named Beckmere and the Runtzmere in honour of the principal founders. The house was constructed on a grassy knoll which gives the appearance of two storeys on the western side and three on the east — something of an architectural oddity.
Great wedding photo opportunities
But enough of history! Today, Clissold House is a popular choice for many happy couples looking for somewhere a little different to exchange their vows. Marvel at original features like the stunning spiral staircase reaching upwards towards a glass dome, the elaborate interiors with their marble fireplaces and lovely old oak floorboards, or the large ornate windows that flood the rooms with natural light. There’s certainly no shortage of romantic backdrops here for your memorable wedding photographs.
The house offers two main rooms on the first floor with outdoor terrace: The Drawing Room, Dining Room and adjoining hallway are ideal for your cosy stylish wedding, providing space for between 50 and 60 guests for the ceremony, followed by the seated dinner (50 – 60) or a standing reception (60-80). The second floor comprises: the Church Room, New River Room and the Dressing room for smaller, more intimate weddings.
So, if you’re looking for a wedding venue close to London, and easily accessible from the Home Counties, then Clissold House near Hackney could well tick all your boxes. A set of my stunning photographs will ensure that you, your loved one and your guests will share a Special Day never to be forgotten.
